Devotees across India observe this festival with great devotion and rituals that involve a day-long fast, prayers, and various puja activities:

  1. Purification of the Puja Area: The day begins with cleaning the home and decorating the puja space with flowers and rangoli, preparing a cradle for baby Krishna.
  2. Bathing the Idol: An idol of Bal Gopal (baby Krishna) is bathed in a sacred mixture called panchamrit, made from milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar.
  3. Adorning the Deity: The idol is then adorned with beautiful clothes and jewelry, and placed in the cradle.
  4. Reciting Bhajans and Kirtans: Devotees sing bhajans and kirtans in praise of Lord Krishna, invoking his blessings and joy.
  5. Breaking the Fast: The fast is broken at midnight, after the Nishita Puja, to celebrate Krishna's birth.
