Superintendent Dr. Angela Chapman said the latest staffing reductions are expected to save about $25.9 million. The decision follows earlier reductions of roughly $25 million involving administrative spending, transportation and school building closures approved in December 2025.
How Many CCS Employees Are Affected?
District leaders said 187 of the 299 eliminated positions are currently vacant. That leaves 112 employees facing layoffs by Thursday, July 31, 2026.
Many of the affected workers are building substitutes. The reductions also include some attendance program specialists and an HR data specialist position.
Building Substitutes Among Major Cuts
The loss of building substitute roles is one of the most visible parts of the CCS job cuts. These employees help schools manage daily staffing needs when teachers or staff members are absent.
District officials said they reviewed positions for months and tried to limit the impact on classrooms by focusing on roles farther from direct instruction.

Board President Dr. Antoinette Miranda described the decision as difficult but necessary as Columbus schools face higher operating costs and limited state funding support.
Chapman previously warned in August 2025 that rising education costs and declining state support were forcing the district to reduce spending. The latest cuts apply to the operating budget, while about $60 million from the capital budget is set for summer school building improvements.
