Modi, Ramgoolam discuss India–Mauritius ties and Indian Ocean stability

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a telephone conversation with Mauritian Prime Minister Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, during which both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the special and historic relationship between India and Mauritius. The discussion focused on strengthening bilateral ties, expanding development cooperation, and ensuring peace and stability in the Indian Ocean Region, underscoring the strategic significance of the island nation in India’s foreign policy outreach.

In a post on X following the call, Modi said the two sides reviewed the progress achieved in wide-ranging cooperation since their last in-person meeting in Varanasi. He noted that the partnership between the two countries remains people-centric and rooted in shared history, cultural bonds, and a vibrant Indian diaspora. The leaders agreed to maintain close engagement across multiple sectors and to work jointly toward common regional goals, particularly maritime security and economic stability in the Indian Ocean.

Modi also extended an invitation to Ramgoolam to visit India next week for the AI Impact Summit, signaling New Delhi’s intention to involve Mauritius in emerging areas such as digital technology and innovation. The summit is expected to provide an opportunity to enhance collaboration in artificial intelligence, digital governance, and technology-driven public services, reflecting the evolving nature of India–Mauritius cooperation.

The latest conversation builds on outcomes from Ramgoolam’s visit to India in September, when both sides agreed to expand partnerships in infrastructure development, healthcare services, energy security, and digital transformation. Several memoranda of understanding were signed during that visit, aimed at accelerating joint projects and boosting capacity-building initiatives. Officials have described these agreements as key to advancing sustainable development and strengthening institutional linkages between the two nations.

People-to-people ties have also remained a central pillar of the relationship. Earlier this year, Modi presented Overseas Citizen of India cards to Ramgoolam and his spouse, Veena Ramgoolam, a symbolic gesture highlighting the deep ancestral connections between the two countries. Around the same time, India broadened OCI eligibility for Mauritian nationals of Indian origin traceable up to the seventh generation, a move intended to reinforce bonds with the Indian diaspora and facilitate closer engagement in education, travel, and business.

With both countries sharing interests in regional security and economic growth, the leaders emphasized continued collaboration to address challenges in the Indian Ocean and to promote a stable, rules-based environment. The renewed diplomatic engagement reflects India’s broader strategy to strengthen partnerships with neighboring and island nations, while Mauritius remains a key ally in advancing shared prosperity and long-term regional stability.
