R&B singer Chris Brown arrested in UK for alleged nightclub bottle attack

Singer Chris Brown was arrested in England on Thursday in connection with an alleged violent incident that occurred in a London nightclub in early 2023. The 36-year-old American musician, who was in the United Kingdom on tour at the time, was taken into custody at a hotel in Manchester. Authorities confirmed the arrest was made in the early hours of May 15 on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm following an incident in Hanover Square, London, on February 19, 2023.

While the Metropolitan Police did not release the suspect’s name in compliance with British legal standards, which prohibit naming individuals before formal charges are filed, multiple sources confirmed Brown was the individual arrested. The investigation is currently being led by detectives from the Central West Area Basic Command Unit. Following his arrest, Brown was transported into police custody where he remains pending further inquiry.

The alleged victim in the case, music producer Abe Diaw, claims he was assaulted by Brown during a night out at Tape, a high-end nightclub located in the Mayfair district of London. According to Diaw, the incident was unprovoked. He alleges that Brown struck him on the head with a bottle of Don Julio 1942 tequila and proceeded to punch and kick him while he lay on the ground. The physical assault, according to Diaw, lasted approximately 30 seconds and resulted in serious injuries.

Diaw was reportedly left unconscious, sustained lacerations on his head, and suffered torn ligaments in his leg. In addition to the physical harm, he claims to be suffering from ongoing emotional trauma and permanent damage. The severity of the attack prompted him to file a civil lawsuit against Brown in November 2023, seeking 12 million pounds (approximately 16 million US dollars) in damages. The suit outlines the injuries and mental distress caused by what he described as a brutal and extended assault.

The case has attracted significant media attention, particularly because Brown has faced several controversies and legal issues over the years. However, this latest development marks one of the most serious accusations brought against him in the UK. According to recent legal filings, Brown’s tour promoter had previously attempted to dismiss parts of Diaw’s lawsuit, but a court denied that motion in April 2024, allowing the full scope of the complaint to proceed.

Chris Brown was performing in the UK as part of his tour during the time of the 2023 incident and is again scheduled to tour across the United Kingdom in June and July this year. Authorities reportedly acted on information about his presence in the UK this week, and police from London traveled to Manchester to carry out the arrest.

The case remains under investigation, and no formal charges have yet been filed. Brown’s representatives have not released a public statement in response to the arrest or lawsuit. As the legal proceedings continue, this situation adds another chapter to the singer's long and controversial history with law enforcement and alleged violent behavior.
