Court Orders Mohammad Shami to Pay Rs 4 Lakh Monthly Alimony

Indian cricketer Mohammad Shami has faced a significant legal setback as the Calcutta High Court ruled in favor of his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, by increasing his monthly alimony payments to Rs 4 lakh. This new order mandates Shami to pay Rs 1.5 lakh per month for Hasin Jahan's personal maintenance and Rs 2.5 lakh for their minor daughter’s care and expenses.

The ruling comes after Jahan appealed against the 2018 decision by the Alipore Court, which had set alimony at a much lower amount of Rs 50,000 for her personal maintenance and Rs 80,000 for their daughter. Jahan had initially requested a larger sum of Rs 10 lakh in total, which was dismissed by the lower court. In her appeal, Jahan's legal team argued that Shami’s substantial earnings, estimated at Rs 7.19 crore annually, justified a higher alimony. She claimed her total monthly expenses, including those for her daughter, exceeded Rs 6 lakh.

Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee of the Calcutta High Court acknowledged Shami's financial capacity and granted Jahan the increased amount, deeming it "just, fair, and reasonable." The court also noted that Shami may choose to contribute more toward his daughter’s educational needs in the future.

The decision has been met with mixed reactions, as Shami’s financial obligations to his estranged wife and child have been a subject of public scrutiny for years. The couple's relationship has been embroiled in legal battles since 2018, when Jahan accused Shami of domestic violence, dowry harassment, and match-fixing. Despite a public reunion with his daughter, Shami’s relationship with Jahan remains contentious.
