US President Donald Trump has once again stirred the global stage, claiming that Washington has “lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest China.” His statement came shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping appeared together at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1.
Trump shared a photo of the three leaders in conversation, remarking sarcastically, May they have a long and prosperous future together! The image quickly gained traction, fuelling speculation over shifting alliances.
When asked about Trump’s remarks, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responded briefly, saying, “We don’t have anything to comment on it at the moment,” indicating New Delhi’s intent to stay away from unnecessary controversy.
SCO Summit Highlights And US-India Strains
The SCO summit, attended by over 20 world leaders, was presented as an alternative to the US-led world order. On the sidelines, Modi met separately with both Putin and Xi, underscoring India’s continued balancing act between maintaining ties with the United States while keeping strong connections with Moscow and Beijing.
Trump’s comments arrive at a delicate time for Washington–New Delhi relations. Bilateral ties are said to be at their lowest point in two decades. The US recently imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports and an additional 25% penalty linked to India’s continued purchase of Russian crude oil. Washington argues India’s energy trade with Moscow undermines sanctions and fuels Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The White House has accused India of profiteering by reselling Russian oil at higher rates, a charge New Delhi rejects. Indian officials maintain that discounted Russian crude is essential for controlling domestic inflation and energy costs, insisting that all trade is within international legal frameworks.
As Trump’s statements add fuel to the already tense situation, analysts warn that the growing closeness of India, Russia, and China could reshape global alliances. With Akhanda SCO summit visuals going viral and the US doubling down on trade penalties, the months ahead may determine how New Delhi balances its role between East and West in a shifting world order.
