UK-India Bolster Ties; Starmer: India 'Economic Superpower in the Making'

India is rapidly emerging as an economic superpower, said British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during his visit to Mumbai on Thursday. He highlighted that India, the world’s largest democracy, is on track to become the third-largest economy by 2028. “The United Kingdom is perfectly placed to be a partner in this journey,” Starmer said while addressing reporters in Mumbai.

Earlier in the day, Keir Starmer met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where they discussed several key global and bilateral issues, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict. When asked whether India’s oil imports from Russia were part of the conversation, Starmer confirmed that both leaders discussed steps toward ending the conflict and the measures being taken to stabilize global energy supplies.

Starmer emphasized that the India-UK trade deal serves as a major launchpad for collaboration in areas like technology, renewable energy, life sciences, and innovation. “I came here leading our biggest-ever business delegation to India to follow through on this trade deal,” he said, adding that it offers immense benefits for both nations. The two countries are also strengthening their cooperation through the UK-India Technology Security Initiative, aiming to boost mutual growth and digital innovation.

Recognizing India’s technological potential, Starmer praised India’s digital ID system as a success story and noted growing enthusiasm among British institutions. He announced that several British universities plan to establish campuses in India, further solidifying educational and research partnerships. Additionally, three new Bollywood blockbusters are set to be filmed in the UK, symbolizing deepening cultural ties between the two nations.

In a significant statement, Starmer expressed his support for the peace plan in Gaza initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump. “I welcome the news that a deal has been reached on the first stage of President Trump’s peace plan for Gaza,” he said, emphasizing Britain’s commitment to ensuring humanitarian aid and the safe return of hostages.

Starmer described his reception in Mumbai as “warm and optimistic,” reflecting the strengthening bond between India and the UK. He noted that the India-UK trade deal, signed during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the UK in July, has already begun creating confidence among businesses. “Even before implementation, the deal has opened up new opportunities and boosted trade optimism,” he said.

Highlighting future prospects, Starmer added, “In a world of economic uncertainty, it’s significant that our two major economies have signed this agreement to bring stability.” He concluded by pointing out that while the UK already has a trillion-dollar tech sector, India is on its way to becoming the fourth, underscoring how both nations are shaping the global digital economy together.
