A shocking incident has sent ripples through the Indian diaspora in Canada after a 30-year-old Indian-origin woman was found murdered in Toronto. Canadian police have confirmed that the case is being investigated as a homicide, with strong suspicion of intimate partner violence. Authorities have issued a Canada-wide arrest warrant for a man believed to have been known to the victim.
The woman has been identified as Himanshi Khurana, a resident of Toronto. Police are actively searching for Abdul Ghafoori, 32, also of Toronto, in connection with her death. According to investigators, the victim and the suspect shared a personal relationship, prompting police to classify the case under intimate partner violence, as reported by CBC News.
Toronto Police stated that officers were initially alerted late on Friday night following a missing person report. The call was received at approximately 10:41 pm on December 19, 2025, from the Strachan Avenue and Wellington Street West area. An extensive search operation was launched immediately, with officers continuing the investigation through the night.
The following morning, on December 20 at around 6:30 am, police located Himanshi Khurana deceased inside a residential property. Authorities confirmed that the circumstances of her death met the criteria for homicide. Investigators have not publicly disclosed further forensic details as the case remains under active investigation.
Police confirmed that Abdul Ghafoori is wanted on a charge of first-degree murder. Under Canadian law, a conviction for first-degree murder can result in a life sentence without the possibility of parole, provided intent and premeditation are established in court. Officials have urged the public not to approach the suspect and to contact emergency services immediately if he is sighted.
India’s diplomatic mission has also responded to the incident. In a statement shared on social media, Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed deep sorrow over the killing and extended condolences to the victim’s family. The consulate confirmed that it is working closely with Canadian authorities and providing all possible assistance to support the grieving family during this difficult time.
The case has reignited conversations around women’s safety, domestic violence, and the vulnerabilities faced by immigrants living abroad. Community leaders and advocacy groups have called for stronger support systems, awareness programs, and timely intervention mechanisms to help prevent such tragedies.
As the investigation continues, Toronto Police have appealed for anyone with information related to the suspect or the incident to come forward. The murder of Himanshi Khurana stands as a grim reminder of the dangers of intimate partner violence and has left both the Indian community and the wider Canadian public deeply shaken.
