Apple has unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, centering its new flagship lineup on major camera, performance, battery and AI upgrades. Announced in Cupertino, California, on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the phones introduce a variable-aperture 48MP Fusion Main camera, A20 Pro and Siri AI with iOS 27.
iPhone 18 Pro camera adds variable aperture
The 48MP Fusion Main camera brings variable aperture to iPhone for the first time. Six laser-cut blades adjust between apertures to manage depth of field and light, while users can manually select from four settings.
New Pro controls in the Camera app include aperture, shutter speed and white balance adjustments, plus a histogram for exposure. Cinematic effects can be applied after capture to video recorded at up to 60 fps, while Time-lapse now supports 4K Dolby Vision HDR.
Apple Reference Image targets photo authenticity
A new Reference mode uses signed sensor data processed through Private Cloud Compute to create what Apple calls an unalterable reference image. It can be viewed beside the finished photo to help determine whether edits were made.
Apple says Reference Image, image metadata and planned SynthID support are designed to help photographers, photojournalists and viewers assess whether images are original, altered or AI-generated.
A20 Pro boosts performance and battery life
Built on a 2-nanometer process, A20 Pro combines a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says the GPU is up to 40% faster than A19 Pro, while a redesigned vapor chamber improves sustained performance.
On eSIM-only models, Apple rates video playback at up to 36 hours on iPhone 18 Pro and 45 hours on iPhone 18 Pro Max. The N1 chip adds Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, while the C2 modem supports mmWave in the U.S.
Siri AI and U.S. release dates
The Pro models run iOS 27 and support Siri AI, which Apple says can use personal context and onscreen awareness while relying on on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute.
The phones come in black, silver, glacier and burgundy. U.S. pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on Saturday, September 12, 2026, with availability beginning Friday, September 18.
