IndiGo Cancels 1,000 Flights, Full Normalcy Expected Dec 10–15, Says CEO

India’s largest airline IndiGo is facing one of its biggest operational disruptions in recent years as flight cancellations surged past 1,000 on December 5 alone, severely impacting passengers across the country. CEO Pieter Elbers issued his first public statement addressing the situation, confirming that the disruptions occurred due to the rebooting of IndiGo’s entire operational system. While the government had assured normalcy by Saturday and full stability by Monday, IndiGo’s CEO stated that complete recovery may instead take 5 to 10 days, with gradual improvement expected between December 10 and 15.

Elbers urged passengers not to visit airports for cancelled flights to avoid crowding and inconvenience, advising travelers to rely on official updates for schedule status. He acknowledged that the airline has been under severe operational stress for three days, leading to major delays and cancellations countrywide. “December 5th is the worst affected, with cancellations well over one thousand,” he revealed in a video announcement.

The airline’s management has rolled out a three-step strategy to stabilize operations. The first focuses on customer communication—messages have already been sent to affected travelers, including details on refunds, cancellations, and support. The second step instructs customers not to attempt airport check-ins for cancelled flights, helping ease congestion. Third, Friday cancellations were strategically planned to reposition crew and aircraft correctly in order to restart operations smoothly from Saturday morning.

IndiGo expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and assured that teams are working continuously to restore services. “We sincerely apologize for the troubles passengers faced during delays or cancellations,” Elbers stated, noting that the airline’s priority remains customer support and rapid operational recovery. With thousands stranded and high travel demand during the season, all eyes are now on how quickly IndiGo can bounce back. Passengers have been advised to monitor real-time flight updates through official channels and prepare for potential delays until services stabilise fully mid-December.
