D. Fadnavis Slams Shiv Sena MLA's Slap Video, Eknath Shinde Condemns Act

A viral video showing Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad physically assaulting a canteen staff member has sparked outrage and heated discussions in the Maharashtra Council. The incident, which took place at the MLA canteen in Mumbai, saw the Buldhana MLA slapping and punching the canteen staffer, Yogesh Kutram, reportedly over complaints about the quality of the food served. The video quickly spread across social media, leading to widespread condemnation.

Responding to Opposition queries during the Maharashtra Council session, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the MLA’s actions, stating that such behavior undermines the decorum of the House. He emphasized that while complaints about the food quality may have been valid, resorting to physical violence was completely unacceptable. "Such an act sends a wrong message to the people," Fadnavis said. He urged the Chair and the Speaker to take appropriate action against the MLA for misusing his position.

Fadnavis further emphasized that a public representative should not resort to violence, and the incident had sent a negative signal to the public about the behavior of elected officials. He described the act as a "serious matter" and called for necessary disciplinary measures to be taken. The Chief Minister also reiterated that while complaints about the food's stale quality were warranted, physical aggression was not the solution.

Shiv Sena chief and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also condemned Gaikwad’s actions, stating that as public representatives, they had a responsibility to set an example. He assured that Gaikwad had been reprimanded and told that slapping someone was wrong. Shinde’s response further distanced the Shinde faction of Shiv Sena from Gaikwad’s actions, highlighting that such behavior was not in line with the values of the party.

Sanjay Gaikwad, in a statement to media, defended his actions, claiming that the food he was served was "rotten" and made him ill. He expressed frustration at his repeated complaints about the stale food, claiming that his concerns were consistently ignored. He added, "I am an MLA and a warrior too. I lost it when they chose not to understand despite my repeated attempts. I used the language Balasaheb Thackeray has taught us."

Gaikwad also stated that he had no regrets about his actions and vowed to raise the issue in the Assembly. When asked if his conduct was appropriate for an MLA, he responded that he was not a Gandhian and saw no wrongdoing in his actions, stating that his frustration was borne out of years of ignored complaints.

In the wake of the incident, Uddhav Thackeray distanced himself from Gaikwad, asserting that the MLA no longer belonged to his faction of Shiv Sena. "He is no longer a Shiv Sainik. He belongs to the Eknath Shinde faction now. That’s not Shiv Sena," Thackeray remarked, further highlighting the divisions within the party since its split in 2022.

The controversy surrounding Sanjay Gaikwad's actions has sparked a broader debate about the behavior of public representatives, particularly when it comes to handling grievances and maintaining the dignity of their positions. The incident has brought renewed attention to the question of accountability for elected officials and the consequences of their actions both within the legislative framework and in public perception.
