Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax dies in suspected murder-suicide
Former Justin Fairfax was found dead alongside his wife, Cerina Fairfax, in their Annandale, Virginia, residence early Thursday, April 16, 2026, in what authorities have described as a suspected murder-suicide.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, officers responded shortly after midnight to a 911 call placed from the couple’s home in the 8100 block of Guinevere Drive. Police said the couple’s teenage son made the call while both children were inside the residence at the time of the incident. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male and female deceased inside the home.

Police Chief Kevin Davis stated that preliminary findings indicate both deaths resulted from gunshot wounds and likely involved the same firearm. Authorities emphasized that all individuals connected to the incident have been accounted for and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Investigators described the case as a domestic-related incident unfolding amid significant marital strain. Officials said the couple was in the early stages of what has been characterized as a complicated divorce. Fairfax had recently been served legal documents tied to an upcoming court proceeding, which authorities believe may have contributed to the events leading up to the shooting.

The investigation has also brought attention to prior domestic tensions. In January 2026, Fairfax contacted law enforcement alleging he had been assaulted by his wife. However, police later determined that no assault had occurred, citing security camera footage from inside the residence that contradicted the claim.

Detectives continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths as part of an ongoing investigation. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the sequence of events but indicated that evidence gathered at the scene will be critical in confirming the preliminary findings.
