Gunfire near Times Square triggers panic and police response
A burst of gunfire near New York City’s Times Square caused panic Thursday afternoon, sending pedestrians running through one of Manhattan’s busiest areas and prompting a large response from the NYPD. The incident happened shortly after 3:30 p.m. near Broadway between West 44th and West 45th Streets, a heavily crowded stretch often filled with tourists, commuters and visitors attending major city events.
Videos from the scene showed people rushing away as shots were heard in the area. Some bystanders appeared to take cover behind barriers, vehicles and nearby structures as fears spread that an active shooter situation may have been unfolding. Initial accounts raised concern that someone had been hit by gunfire, but police later said no one was struck by bullets. Authorities confirmed that one person suffered a knife wound during the violence.
According to the NYPD, the incident began as a dispute involving a large group of people. The confrontation escalated into a physical fight, during which a 26-year-old man was slashed in the neck. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, and officials said his injuries were not considered life-threatening. Police said he is expected to recover.
Investigators said a 17-year-old boy allegedly opened fire a short time later toward the same group. Officers arrested the teenager soon after the incident and recovered a firearm. Formal charges had not been announced as of Thursday evening. Authorities continued reviewing the sequence of events and were seeking to speak with others who may have been involved in the dispute.
The gunfire came on a day when public safety resources were already stretched across New York City. Thousands of officers had been deployed for the New York Knicks championship parade, while Times Square was also seeing added crowds connected to FIFA World Cup-related activity. The combination of tourists, fans and regular Midtown foot traffic made the incident especially disruptive.
Dozens of officers moved into the area after reports of gunfire, and parts of the district were temporarily blocked off as investigators searched for evidence. Police examined several vehicles near the scene, including a blue Hyundai that drew attention from forensic teams. The NYPD said the investigation remains active as officials work to determine what led to the dispute and whether additional people played a role.
