Unidentified attackers targeted the Magura residence of former Bangladesh cricket captain and former Awami League lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan on Wednesday night, August 5, 2026.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. local time, according to police and local reports. Attackers threw bricks at the property, damaged windows and hurled crude incendiary devices toward the house. A fire reportedly broke out near the gate and affected part of the upper section before it was brought under control.
No one was injured because the residence was unoccupied at the time. Police deployed additional personnel around the property and began investigating the identities and motives of those involved.
Magura Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Md Abdullah Al Mamun said the attackers vandalised the house and attempted to set it on fire. Authorities had not announced any arrests when initial reports were published.
Petrol Bombs Thrown at Former Captain’s Home
Images and accounts from the scene showed damage to the property following the petrol bomb attack. The available reports differ slightly over whether one or two devices were thrown, so the precise number should remain attributed to investigators rather than presented as confirmed fact.
The attack drew attention because of its timing. It occurred only hours after Shakib participated in a politically sensitive media programme linked to Sheikh Hasina, the former Bangladesh prime minister who has been living in India since her government fell in August 2024.
Shakib is one of Bangladesh’s most prominent athletes and previously represented the Magura-1 constituency as an Awami League member of parliament. His parliamentary term ended after Bangladesh’s legislature was dissolved following the 2024 political upheaval.
Sheikh Hasina Announces Bangladesh Return Plan
Hasina addressed journalists through an audio link during an event organised by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia in New Delhi on August 5. She said she intended to return to Bangladesh in December 2026 and called for restrictions on the Awami League to be removed.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs had earlier stated that the programme was organised by a private organisation and was not sponsored or supported by the Indian government. Bangladesh had warned domestic media organisations against broadcasting Hasina’s remarks, citing an existing court restriction.
Shakib’s participation attracted attention because of his previous political association with Hasina’s party. However, police had not publicly established that the Magura attack was directly organised in response to the event. The timing creates an apparent connection, but investigators must determine the motive.
Police Investigate Amid Political Tensions
The attack reflects the continuing political divisions in Bangladesh two years after the uprising that removed Hasina from power. Her public address prompted protests and criticism from the Bangladeshi government, while supporters continued to call for the Awami League’s return to political activity.
Authorities must now determine who attacked Shakib’s residence, how the assailants obtained the incendiary devices and whether the incident was planned. Security camera footage, witness statements and forensic evidence from the damaged property could help establish the sequence of events.
Until police release verified findings, the incident should be reported as an attack by unidentified individuals rather than blamed on any political party or protest group. That distinction is essential in a tense environment where unverified claims can quickly intensify unrest.
