The Premi murder SIA probe has returned to focus after investigators searched nine locations across Jammu and Kashmir in the 1990 killing of poet Sarwanand Kaul ‘Premi’ and his son Virendra. The SIA raids are aimed at tracing suspects, accomplices and evidence in the decades-old case.
SIA raids
The State Investigation Agency of Jammu and Kashmir Police carried out searches at nine locations on Wednesday in connection with FIR No. 45/1990, registered at Police Station Dooru in Anantnag district. Officials said the case is now being investigated by the SIA. Six locations were searched in Rajouri district, two in Jammu and one in the Kashmir Valley.
Investigators are examining people and properties suspected of having links to the conspiracy behind the killings. The agency is seeking evidence that could help identify those involved and clarify how the crime was planned and carried out.
J&K search
The latest J&K search marks a significant step in a case that has remained unresolved for more than three decades. Authorities have not yet publicly detailed what material, if any, was seized during the searches. The operation shows that investigators are revisiting old leads and looking for information that may still be available after 36 years.
The case also reflects renewed attention to unresolved killings from the early years of militancy in Kashmir. The SIA has recently pursued other long-pending cases from 1990, including the Sarla Bhat murder investigation.
1990 case
Sarwanand Kaul ‘Premi’, a noted Kashmiri poet, writer, translator and social activist, lived in Sof-Shali in the Kokernag area of Anantnag. He and his 27-year-old son, Virendra Kaul, were abducted from their home at the end of April 1990. Their bodies were recovered on May 1, 1990.
The killings took place during a period of intense violence and fear in the Valley, when targeted attacks and threats contributed to the displacement of many Kashmiri Pandits. Premi’s murder became one of the widely remembered cases associated with that period.
Premi case
Premi was known for his literary and social work and authored and translated several works. Reports note that his literary contributions included translations involving the Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana and Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali.
His death, along with that of his son, left the family seeking answers for decades. The Premi case has remained significant in discussions surrounding unresolved violence against Kashmiri Pandits.
The renewed investigation does not itself establish guilt. Individuals whose homes or properties are searched cannot be treated as responsible unless investigators establish evidence and a court determines criminal liability.
Kaul probe
The Kaul probe is now focused on identifying suspects, possible accomplices and evidence connected to the double murder. Officials had not announced arrests linked to Wednesday’s searches when initial details of the operation emerged.
Further developments will depend on what investigators recover and whether the SIA can connect new evidence to events from 1990. For the Kaul family, the renewed investigation represents another effort to establish what happened and determine who was responsible for the killings.
