A 29-year-old software professional from Telangana’s Mahabubnagar district was shot dead by police in the United States after a violent altercation with his roommate. The incident, which occurred on September 3 in Santa Clara, California, has left his family in India devastated and appealing to authorities for assistance in bringing his body home.
The victim, Mohammed Nizamuddin, had been living in California after completing his master’s degree in the US and working in the technology sector. His father, Mohammed Hasnuddin, said he learned of his son’s death through a friend and only received details days later. According to him, the argument with his roommate began over what was described as a minor issue but escalated into a confrontation that ended fatally.
Hasnuddin wrote to India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar requesting immediate help to repatriate his son’s remains to Mahabubnagar. He expressed anguish over the lack of clarity surrounding the incident, stating that he did not understand why his son had to be shot by police and was desperate for answers. The family has also received support from local representatives, with appeals made to the government to intervene on their behalf.
According to Santa Clara Police, officers were dispatched to a residence on Eisenhower Drive in the early hours of September 3 after receiving reports of a stabbing. They stated that Nizamuddin had allegedly attacked his roommate with a knife, inflicting injuries before officers arrived. Police said that upon entering the home, they found him armed and threatening further violence. Officers then fired at him, and although he was rushed to a hospital, he was later pronounced dead.
The injured roommate was hospitalized and is currently receiving treatment. Police officials added that two knives were recovered from the scene. Santa Clara Police Chief Cory Morgan defended the officers’ actions, saying their response prevented further harm and potentially saved a life. He described the situation as volatile and dangerous, explaining that the use of force was based on the immediate threat posed.
While the police version suggests that Nizamuddin’s actions left officers with no choice, his family in India has questioned the necessity of such extreme measures. They argue that the young professional was a bright student who had worked hard to secure a future in the United States and that his life should not have ended in this manner. The family has also voiced concerns over whether cultural or communication barriers played a role in how the incident unfolded.
Community leaders in Telangana have extended support to the grieving family and echoed the call for the Indian government to ensure that justice is done. The incident has also sparked conversations about the safety of Indian students and professionals living abroad, particularly in the US where cases of violence have raised alarm in recent years.
Nizamuddin’s father has emphasized that his son was a dedicated student and professional who had gone abroad with hopes of building a better life. The family’s immediate priority now is to bring his body back to Mahabubnagar for last rites. The case continues to draw attention both in India and among Indian communities overseas, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to his death.
This tragedy underscores the challenges faced by immigrants adjusting to life abroad and the potential dangers of interpersonal disputes escalating into fatal incidents. As his family mourns in Telangana, the larger Indian diaspora is left grappling with questions of safety, justice, and the treatment of foreigners in sensitive law enforcement situations.
