Newsom Alleges Political Retaliation
California Governor Gavin Newsom accused President Donald Trump of using the Justice Department to pursue a politically motivated investigation targeting him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. Newsom said federal agents had contacted friends, relatives and former employees while requesting records connected to the couple. He argued that investigators had not identified wrongdoing and were instead searching for a possible offence. The Democratic governor described the scrutiny as retaliation for his frequent criticism of Trump and his growing national political profile.
Presidential Ambitions Enter Dispute
Newsom said the investigation was connected to speculation that he may seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. The term-limited governor has increased his presence outside California and acknowledged that he is considering a White House campaign. In a video statement, he claimed Trump was targeting him because he had repeatedly challenged the president publicly. Newsom also accused the administration of establishing a broader pattern of using federal institutions against political opponents.
Multiple Inquiries Reported
Federal investigators in Sacramento have reportedly been examining several matters involving people connected to Newsom since 2025. One inquiry concerns the finances and tax affairs of Jennifer Siebel Newsom, while another involves individuals linked to the governor’s office. Newsom’s former chief of staff, Dana Williamson, recently pleaded guilty in a separate federal fraud case. However, the Justice Department has not publicly confirmed that Newsom himself is the target of a criminal investigation or announced charges against the governor or his wife.
Questions Over Federal Power
Newsom’s office has filed a public-records request seeking communications and documents related to the federal activity. The dispute adds another front to the long-running confrontation between California’s Democratic leadership and the Trump administration. It also raises questions about political accountability, prosecutorial independence and the evidence supporting investigations involving elected officials. Until federal authorities release further information, Newsom’s accusations and the purpose of the inquiries remain contested.
