Tragedy Triggers Statewide Crackdown
The Uttar Pradesh government has imposed a strict ban on coaching centres and all commercial activities operating from basements following the deadly fire in Aliganj, Lucknow. The incident, which claimed at least 15 lives, has exposed serious violations in building safety compliance and triggered a large-scale enforcement response across the state.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered immediate action, stating that basements must not be used for any form of commercial activity, including coaching institutes. He directed officials to ensure strict adherence to fire safety and disaster management norms in all urban areas.
Investigation Into Building Violations
Preliminary findings from the Lucknow Development Authority suggest that the building involved in the tragedy had undergone unauthorized modifications. A property originally approved for residential use was allegedly converted into a commercial complex without proper permissions.
Officials are now examining whether violations of sanctioned building plans and fire safety rules contributed to the severity of the fire. Notices have been issued to property owners, giving them 15 days to respond, with demolition action also under consideration if explanations are found unsatisfactory.
Statewide Inspection and Enforcement Drive
Following the tragedy, the state administration has launched a statewide inspection drive targeting commercial establishments operating in residential zones, particularly coaching centres using basement spaces. Authorities have intensified checks to identify unsafe structures and enforce compliance with urban planning regulations.
The Lucknow Development Authority has also expanded its scrutiny to nearby buildings in the Aliganj area, aiming to prevent similar incidents in the future. Officials have warned that strict legal action will be taken against violations, and accountability will extend to enforcement officers if negligence is found.
Public Safety Priority
Authorities have reiterated that public safety remains the top priority and that no relaxation will be given to structures violating building norms. The crackdown marks one of the most aggressive safety enforcement actions in recent years in Uttar Pradesh. The investigation is ongoing, and further regulatory actions are expected as authorities continue assessing compliance failures linked to the tragedy.
