Karnataka Unveils Praja Seva Department In Major Governance Reform
In a significant move aimed at transforming public administration and enhancing service delivery, the Karnataka government has established a new Praja Seva Department by bringing together several key governance and citizen-service wings under one umbrella. The decision, approved by the state Cabinet and formalised through a government order issued on June 24, is being viewed as a major step towards building a more efficient and citizen-friendly administration.
The new department will function as the central agency responsible for coordinating public grievance redressal, administrative reforms, simplification of government procedures and delivery of essential citizen services. Officials believe the restructuring will eliminate duplication of work, improve inter-departmental coordination and provide a more streamlined experience for citizens interacting with government offices.
Administrative Reforms, Sakala And Grievance Wings Merged
As part of the restructuring exercise, the Karnataka government has merged three important entities into the Praja Seva Department. These include the Administrative Reforms wing, the Public Grievances Division and the Sakala Mission. By integrating these functions into a single department, the government aims to create a unified system capable of handling citizen concerns more effectively and ensuring timely service delivery.
The department will also supervise flagship initiatives such as Janaspandana and Sakala, both of which play a crucial role in connecting citizens with government services. Officials stated that the integration is expected to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and ensure faster resolution of complaints and service requests submitted by the public.
Government Sanctions 73 Posts For New Department
To support the newly created administrative structure, the state government has sanctioned 73 posts and consolidated officers and staff from the merged entities. The move is intended to ensure smooth functioning of the department while maintaining continuity in ongoing public service programmes.
Senior officials noted that bringing personnel from different wings under one organisational setup would facilitate better communication, quicker decision-making and more effective implementation of reforms. The consolidation is also expected to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and improve accountability across departments.
Focus On Transparency And Citizen-Centric Governance
The Karnataka government has positioned the Praja Seva Department as a key instrument for improving governance standards and making government services more accessible. According to officials, the initiative has been designed to promote transparency, accountability and responsiveness while reducing procedural delays that often affect citizens seeking government assistance.
The department is expected to focus on process simplification and digital governance measures to ensure that services are delivered within defined timelines. By centralising grievance handling and service delivery functions, the administration hopes to create a more responsive system that addresses public concerns quickly and efficiently.
The creation of the Praja Seva Department marks one of the most significant governance reforms undertaken by the state government in recent years. With a dedicated framework for administrative reforms, grievance resolution and citizen services, Karnataka aims to strengthen trust between citizens and government institutions while delivering faster, simpler and more effective public services across the state.
