The Anglo-Zanzibar War, widely recognized as the shortest war in recorded history, unfolded on Wednesday, August 27, 1896, in the East African island territory of Zanzibar. The conflict, which lasted between 38 and 45 minutes, involved forces of the British Empire and the Sultanate of Zanzibar, highlighting the stark imbalance of power during the colonial era.

The confrontation began following the death of Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini, after which his successor, Sultan Khalid bin Barghash, assumed power without British approval. At the time, Zanzibar was under significant British influence, and the appointment of a ruler required their consent. British authorities issued an ultimatum demanding Khalid step down by 9:00 AM East Africa Time on Wednesday, August 27, 1896.

When the ultimatum expired without compliance, British naval forces positioned off the coast initiated a bombardment of the Sultan’s palace. The attack involved several warships firing sustained cannon rounds, quickly overwhelming the palace defenses. Within minutes, large portions of the structure were destroyed, and fires broke out across the complex.

By approximately 9:40 AM East Africa Time, the Sultan’s forces had surrendered, effectively ending the conflict in less than an hour. Sultan Khalid fled the palace and later sought refuge in the German consulate, bringing a swift conclusion to the hostilities.

The outcome resulted in a decisive British victory and the installation of a ruler aligned with British interests. While the duration of the war was remarkably brief, its consequences reflected broader patterns of colonial control and political intervention in the region.
