Chicago fireworks cancellations affected several suburbs on Saturday, July 4, 2026, as heavy rain, flooding and more storms disrupted Independence Day events across the area.
Officials in multiple Chicago-area communities canceled or delayed parades, concerts and fireworks after parks, roads and launch sites were left unsafe. A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect through at least 7:00 PM local time.
Chicago Fireworks Cancellations Follow Heavy Rain and Flooding
In Lombard, officials canceled the fireworks display at Madison Meadow Park after the site received about 4.52 inches of rain since Thursday night. The village said standing water and deeply saturated grounds made the park unsuitable for a large public gathering.
Officials also said the fireworks contractor determined that trucks and setup equipment could not safely move onto the saturated grounds. A future date for the Lombard fireworks display was still under review.
Park Forest canceled its Fourth of July parade, live entertainment and fireworks because of expected thunderstorms and the condition of the Village Green. The village said the decision was made with the safety of residents, visitors, volunteers, performers and staff in mind. Officials plan to move the events to Labor Day weekend.
More Chicago Suburbs Delay or Cancel July 4 Events
Woodridge and Downers Grove postponed their joint fireworks show after the launch site was considered unsafe for setup. Officials said the display would not be held Sunday, July 5, 2026, because the vendor had other Independence Day commitments.
Streamwood canceled its fireworks display for the year, saying heavy rainfall left the grounds too saturated and its planned rain date could not be used.
Other suburbs also changed holiday plans. Flossmoor canceled its children’s bicycle parade because of storm damage, hazardous roads and cleanup needs. Glen Ellyn canceled its Saturday evening celebration after its afternoon parade went ahead. Huntley moved its fireworks show to Sunday, July 5, 2026.
Naperville canceled fireworks at Frontier Park, while Elgin canceled its Festival Park celebration. Officials urged residents to check local updates before heading to any remaining Fourth of July events.
The cancellations show how quickly severe weather can disrupt major holiday gatherings, especially when rain leaves parks, launch sites and public roads unsafe even before evening fireworks begin.
