FAA Extends Chicago O’Hare Flight Cap Through October 2027

The FAA has extended the Chicago O’Hare flight cap through October 30, 2027, keeping the airport at 2,708 scheduled operations per day. The order targets congestion and delays as United and American compete for growth amid construction constraints.

CHICAGO — The Federal Aviation Administration has extended scheduling limits at Chicago O’Hare International Airport through October 30, 2027, maintaining restrictions intended to reduce congestion and widespread flight delays.

The FAA announced the extension on Friday, July 10, 2026, saying the limits would support safe and efficient operations amid continuing airspace and operational constraints.

FAA O’Hare Flight Limits Remain at 2,708 Operations

The order limits O’Hare to 2,708 scheduled arrivals and departures per day. The restrictions were introduced for the period from May 17 through October 24, 2026, but will now continue for approximately another year.

Airlines had planned as many as 3,080 daily operations during peak periods in summer 2026, nearly 15% more than the previous summer. The FAA determined that the proposed schedules exceeded what the airport could reliably handle.

Chicago O’Hare Congestion Drives FAA Decision

The FAA initially described the limits as a temporary response to construction and capacity constraints. However, O’Hare continued to experience significant delays linked to runway work, weather and heavy schedules.

During summer 2025, only about 56% of departures and 58% of arrivals operated on time, according to figures cited by the FAA. The agency also said ongoing construction had caused taxiway closures and constrained gate capacity.

United and American Airlines Support Extension

United Airlines and American Airlines, O’Hare’s two dominant carriers, have been expanding their Chicago operations while competing for passengers and market share.

American called the extension a prudent decision that should improve reliability and operational stability. United said the limits would support reliability while airport construction continues, adding that it expects further growth as O’Hare’s capacity increases.

What the Flight Cap Means for Travelers

The order does not mean O’Hare will operate exactly 2,708 flights every day. Instead, it restricts how many operations airlines may schedule during the covered periods, particularly on high-demand days.

Travelers could still face disruptions caused by severe weather, construction or air traffic conditions. However, the FAA expects the controlled schedules to reduce the risk of airlines planning more flights than the airport can consistently manage.

The limits are now scheduled to remain in effect through October 2027. Any future increase will likely depend on construction progress, available airport capacity and evidence that O’Hare can accommodate additional flights without causing another decline in reliability.
