Silo season 3 episode 9, titled “Farewell,” delivers one of the most consequential chapters of the season as the story continues across two timelines. In the present, the fight for Silo 18 reaches a critical point, while events in the past finally reveal how the original Silos came into existence.

The penultimate episode brings major developments for Bernard, Juliette and the resistance inside Silo 18, while Daniel and Helen’s storyline moves toward the catastrophe that shaped the world viewers know today.

Bernard Makes His Final Stand in Silo 18

After Juliette is captured, Bernard steps forward and turns himself in. Once known as one of the show’s major antagonists, Bernard has become a far more complicated figure in season 3.

He attempts to reason with the mysterious voice controlling operations through IT, but the effort fails. Bernard is ordered to go outside to clean, effectively receiving a death sentence.

His surrender, however, becomes part of a larger plan. Martha, Knox, Shirley and others work to destroy the system being used to distribute Vitamin D+ throughout the Silo. Sheriff Paul also becomes involved after discovering information that could help the resistance carry out its mission.

The group hopes to use Bernard’s cleaning as a distraction while they move against the system controlling the residents.

Bernard Raises a Major Question About Silo 1

Before being sent outside, Bernard shares an important theory with Juliette. He believes the mysterious voice from Silo 1 may not be artificial intelligence at all.

Instead, Bernard suspects that a person, or perhaps a succession of people, has been making decisions behind the scenes while presenting those choices as part of an unquestionable system.

If his theory is correct, it would undermine one of the central beliefs that has kept the Silos functioning for generations.

Bernard encourages Juliette to continue fighting and tells her that she was chosen for a reason. He is then sent outside without a protective suit and collapses shortly afterward, bringing his journey to an apparent end.

His death could become a turning point for Juliette and the resistance as the struggle for control of Silo 18 intensifies.

Daniel and Helen Witness the Beginning of the Silos

The episode also returns to the past, where Daniel and Helen have built a life together and are preparing for the birth of their child.

They return for the official unveiling of the completed Silos. Daniel also reconnects with his sister Charlotte, who appears to have found happiness in her own life.

During the event, however, Daniel and Helen are unexpectedly assigned to different locations. Helen is directed toward Silo 18, while Daniel is taken to Silo 1 to meet Stenson and Senator Thurman.

Daniel begins receiving strange messages that make him suspicious. Both he and Helen attempt to find each other, but their efforts come too late.

As they communicate from separate locations, a nuclear explosion suddenly changes everything.

People are forced to seek shelter inside the Silos. Daniel enters Silo 1, while Helen is pushed into Silo 18, separating the couple and apparently establishing the beginning of the underground society that drives the series.

Silo Season 3 Finale Sets Up Major Questions

Episode 9 connects the past and present in a way that significantly expands the mystery surrounding Silo 1 and the origins of the underground system.

Bernard’s theory raises new questions about who is truly controlling the Silos, while Daniel and Helen’s separation could have major implications for the families and characters living in Silo 18 generations later.

With Bernard seemingly gone and Juliette still fighting against the system, the season finale is positioned to reveal more about the true purpose of the Silos and the people behind their creation.
