Delhi Airport Gifts Seed Balls to Flyers for Green Future

In celebration of World Environment Day, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has launched a unique initiative by distributing over 6,000 seed balls to passengers. Spearheaded by GMR Aero’s Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), this campaign aligns environmental awareness with community upliftment. Flyers are invited to take home and plant seed balls made from ecologically valuable species such as Lemon, Tamarind, Gooseberry, Neem, and Peepal, chosen for their air-purifying, medicinal, and biodiversity-supporting properties.

This initiative is not only about encouraging individuals to contribute to greener surroundings, but also about empowering local rural communities. The seed balls are handcrafted by villagers as part of a livelihood programme, ensuring that sustainability efforts translate into real-world benefits. When planted, these native trees can provide shade, improve air quality, enhance green cover, and offer long-term income through fruit-bearing harvests.

According to DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, the campaign reflects the airport’s commitment to both environmental and social goals. He stated that Delhi Airport aims to go beyond infrastructure by actively protecting the planet and empowering communities. Already a leader in green aviation, Delhi Airport holds Asia’s first Level 5 Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) with Net Zero Carbon Emission status. About 95% of its energy use comes from renewable sources, and it continues to implement sustainable technologies, such as electric vehicle fleets and rainwater harvesting systems.

This seed ball campaign reinforces Delhi Airport’s image as a future-forward and environmentally conscious hub. By involving travelers in the reforestation movement and supporting rural livelihoods, the initiative bridges the gap between ecological responsibility and social development.
