Punjab Government Rolls Out WhatsApp Helpline for NRIs

In a bid to better serve its global community, the Punjab government has launched a dedicated WhatsApp helpline for NRIs. This innovative initiative allows overseas Punjabis to report grievances instantly, with each complaint routed directly to the appropriate government department and the NRI wing of the Punjab Police, led by the additional director general of police.

 

The move comes in the wake of a high-profile incident involving the deportation of 104 Indian migrants from the United States. Amid reports of harsh treatment—where migrants were reportedly handcuffed and chained during a 40-hour flight on a US military aircraft that landed in Amritsar on February 5—the helpline aims to provide a quick, accessible solution for NRIs in distress.

 

Beyond the helpline, NRIs seeking further assistance can visit the official portal at nri.punjab.gov.in to explore a range of supportive services. Administrative Reforms and NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal also announced that his department is streamlining the countersigning and attestation of critical documents. This service will help Punjabis abroad secure essential certificates—including birth, medical, driving, education, and police clearance documents—making it easier to navigate bureaucratic processes from overseas.

 

Simultaneously, the Punjab and Haryana governments have intensified efforts against unscrupulous travel agents facilitating illegal migration via so-called ‘Dunki’ routes. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has revealed plans to propose strict new legislation to control illegal immigration in the upcoming budget session. Additionally, police in both states have registered cases against travel agents accused of deceiving illegal migrants.

 

This multi-pronged initiative underscores Punjab's commitment to protecting its diaspora, ensuring that NRIs receive prompt, effective support and that their concerns are addressed swiftly in these challenging times.
