CRPF Jawan Arrested for Espionage Linked to Pahalgam Attack

A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan has been arrested in Delhi on serious charges of espionage, having allegedly shared classified information with Pakistan Intelligence Officers (PIOs) since 2023. The jawan, identified as Moti Ram Jat, was posted in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, until just six days before a major terror attack in the area that claimed the lives of 26 civilians.

The arrest was carried out by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is now examining whether Jat’s intelligence leaks were linked to the timing and coordination of the Pahalgam attack. According to officials, Jat held the position of Assistant Sub-Inspector and was allegedly involved in passing on operational and strategic movement details of Indian forces to Pakistani handlers in exchange for money.

Investigators discovered irregularities in his social media activity, which raised red flags. "His actions were in violation of security protocols," a CRPF statement noted, leading to deeper surveillance and eventually, a detailed NIA probe. Jat was officially dismissed from service on May 21, 2025, under provisions of the Indian Constitution and CRPF Rules. He is currently in NIA custody until June 6 as interrogation and evidence collection continue.

The arrest is part of a broader anti-espionage operation being conducted by Indian intelligence and counterterrorism agencies. The crackdown has resulted in 13 arrests so far from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, all allegedly part of an expansive spy network with ties to Pakistan. Among the arrested are YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra and a woman named Guzala, who both reportedly maintained communication with a Pakistani operative named Ehsan-ur-Rahim, alias Danish, an ISI agent expelled from India earlier this month for espionage.

Sources confirm that Malhotra was being groomed as an intelligence asset, with her strong social media influence used as a front for gathering sensitive data. She had reportedly traveled near border areas and military zones, even filming near radar and BSF installations, all of which raised the alarm.

The case has raised major concerns within India’s internal security apparatus, as it highlights the infiltration of national defense layers through both digital and human channels. From CRPF ranks to social media influencers, the sophistication of the spy network points to a well-coordinated operation by hostile entities. Officials are now reevaluating protocols around digital activity, insider threats, and inter-agency information sharing, especially in sensitive regions like Jammu and Kashmir. The NIA's investigation continues to unravel the full extent of the network and determine how deep the breach may go. Authorities have assured that additional arrests and preventive measures will be implemented swiftly to prevent future security lapses.
