Austin ISD Plans to Address School Closures, Boundary Changes Amid Budget Deficit

Austin Independent School District (ISD) is taking critical steps to address a multi-year budget deficit and ensure a more efficient education system. The district, which has faced deficits for three consecutive years, plans to close some schools, redraw attendance boundaries, and implement other realignment measures. The ultimate goal is to reduce $30 million from the district’s budget and streamline operations while preserving the quality of education.

Superintendent Matias Segura emphasized that this overhaul aims to correct "misalignments" across the district. The process will include assessing campuses for potential closures or boundary changes, although no specific school closure list has been finalized. The district will present a detailed plan to the Board of Trustees on October 9, with a vote expected on November 20.

One of the primary reasons for the proposed changes is the disparity in student enrollment. Some schools are overenrolled, exceeding their capacity by over 100%, while others operate at just one-third of their capacity. Officials are considering consolidating campuses and realigning boundaries to address this issue and reduce unnecessary operational costs.

The district aims to cut between 8,577 and 13,156 seats from its total capacity of 91,971, aligning the available space with actual enrollment numbers, which have declined from 86,000 students in the early 2000s to 73,000 students today. These changes are expected to make the system more sustainable in the long term.

Segura and the school board have committed to ensuring that any closures will come with a thorough transition plan, including a grandfathering policy for students who wish to remain at their current school. The realignment will also prioritize maintaining community connections, despite the challenges of redrawing boundaries and consolidating campuses. With these proposed changes, Austin ISD aims to create a more balanced, efficient system that can better serve the needs of its students and community in the years to come.
