Russia launched one of its most intense aerial assaults of the year against Ukraine, firing a large number of missiles and drones in a coordinated attack that began overnight and continued into Thursday morning, April 16, 2026 (local time in Ukraine). Ukrainian officials reported that at least 16 people were killed and more than 100 others were injured in the strikes, marking a significant escalation following a brief Easter ceasefire between the two countries.
According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, approximately 700 drones along with 19 ballistic missiles and additional cruise missiles were launched toward Ukrainian territory. He stated that Ukrainian air defense systems intercepted 636 drones and some of the incoming missiles, but acknowledged that not all threats were neutralized.
Kyiv, the capital, experienced the heaviest bombardment, though damage and casualties were also reported in other regions, including Odesa and Dnipro. Several projectiles that evaded air defenses struck residential areas, causing structural damage and civilian casualties. Among those killed was a 12-year-old boy, Zelenskyy confirmed in a public statement, offering condolences to the victims’ families.
The Ukrainian president strongly criticized Russia’s actions, arguing that such attacks demonstrate a continued commitment to military escalation rather than diplomacy. He said Russia “does not deserve any easing of global policy or lifting of sanctions,” and accused Moscow of deliberately prolonging the conflict.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine would continue to defend its population using all available means while also calling for sustained international pressure aimed at achieving peace. The scale and intensity of the latest assault highlight ongoing volatility in the conflict and raise concerns about further escalation despite intermittent ceasefire efforts.
