West Bengal is witnessing one of its most historic political transitions, as Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is set to take the oath as the state’s Chief Minister after the BJP's monumental win in the 2026 Assembly elections. The BJP's sweeping victory, securing 207 seats compared to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party's 80, marks a dramatic shift in the state’s political landscape, ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year reign. This change is seen as one of the most significant political realignments in Bengal’s modern history, rivaling Mamata Banerjee's own "Poriborton" movement that ousted the Left Front in 2011.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah formally announced Suvendu Adhikari as the BJP Legislative Party leader in Kolkata on Friday (May 8), after Adhikari met with West Bengal Governor R N Ravi to stake his claim to form the government. Adhikari, who had previously defeated Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by a margin of over 15,000 votes, also managed to retain his seat in Nandigram, further solidifying his political position.
The swearing-in ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary, will see top BJP leaders in attendance, including Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda, and Dharmendra Pradhan. BJP leaders have hailed this victory as both ideological and organizational, with promises of restoring law and order, overhauling governance, and bringing the long-awaited vision of "Sonar Bangla" to life.
