Reikado Hall Fire on Miyajima Island Destroys Historic Temple, Eternal Flame Preserved

Reikado Hall, a centuries-old Shingon Buddhist temple on Miyajima Island, was completely destroyed by fire on Wednesday, May 20. Known for housing a sacred “eternal flame” that had reportedly burned for more than 1,200 years, the hall was reduced to ruins despite efforts to save the structure. Temple officials confirmed that the eternal flame was safely relocated before the collapse, ensuring that its spiritual legacy endures. The Daisho-in temple, responsible for managing Reikado Hall, expressed gratitude for public concern and support. Investigations are ongoing to determine how the fire began.

Challenges of Fighting Fire Near Mount Misen

The blaze occurred near the summit of Mount Misen, approximately 1,500 feet above sea level, creating significant challenges for emergency responders. Over 30 firefighters, aided by a helicopter, battled the flames for more than an hour. Temple staff first reported the fire at 8:32 a.m. Local authorities are reviewing safety measures for historic temples and shrines, especially after several fires affected sacred sites across Japan in early 2026.

Spiritual Significance of Reikado Hall

Reikado Hall held profound historical and spiritual importance. The eternal flame was originally lit by the ninth-century Buddhist monk Kukai, also known as Kobo Daishi, during his ascetic practices. Over the centuries, the flame became a symbol of continuity and peace, even being used to ignite the Flame of Peace at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Devotees consider water boiled over the flame to have healing properties, and the temple remains a key spiritual site for pilgrims and tourists alike.

Plans for Reconstruction and Preservation

Following the fire, the Daisho-in temple announced immediate plans to rebuild Reikado Hall. The reconstruction will aim to preserve the hall’s traditional architecture while incorporating reinforced fire safety measures. Authorities are continuing their investigation to prevent similar incidents at other historic temples. Despite the devastation, the relocation of the eternal flame ensures the temple’s spiritual and cultural legacy continues.
