An F-1 student on Optional Practical Training shared a personal U.S. re-entry experience after returning from India following a 40-day family visit.
According to the student’s account, the return journey was on Etihad Airways. During the transit process at Abu Dhabi, the student said there was no full U.S. immigration interview. Airport staff reportedly checked the student’s passport and Form I-20 before placing a clearance stamp on the boarding pass.
F-1 OPT Travel Experience Through Chicago Immigration
The student said the U.S. immigration process took place after arrival in Chicago. At the port of entry, the student handed over the passport and Form I-20 to the immigration officer.
The officer reportedly asked basic questions, including how long the student had been in the United States, how long the student had stayed outside the U.S., and the purpose of the India trip.
For F-1 students on OPT, official travel guidance generally points to the importance of carrying key documents such as a valid passport, valid F-1 visa, Form I-20 with travel endorsement, Employment Authorization Document, and employment-related records.
The experience highlights the kind of routine questions some F-1 OPT students may face when returning to the United States after international travel. However, immigration processing can vary depending on the airport, travel history, documents, officer review, and individual case.
