A Canada-based man has been arrested in connection with the tragic death of Fauja Singh, the world's oldest marathon runner, in a hit-and-run case that has triggered nationwide mourning. The accused, identified as 26-year-old Amritpal Singh Dhillon, reportedly told police during interrogation that he had no idea the man he fatally struck was a global icon until he saw the news coverage following the incident.
The accident occurred on Monday in Bias village of Punjab’s Jalandhar district, where 114-year-old Fauja Singh was walking alongside the Jalandhar–Pathankot highway. According to eyewitnesses, the elderly athlete was thrown several feet into the air after being hit by a speeding SUV. He succumbed to his injuries later that same evening. The vehicle involved, a Toyota Fortuner, was tracked by authorities through fragments of a broken headlight found at the site and CCTV footage from nearby locations. After tracing the vehicle and linking it to the suspect, police arrested Dhillon from his residence in Kartarpur on Tuesday night. The SUV, which had changed hands multiple times, was also recovered and seized.
Senior Superintendent of Police Harvinder Singh Virk stated at a press conference that the accused admitted to speeding at the time of the accident, claiming he was in a hurry to attend to some personal work. Dhillon also mentioned that he had replaced one of the vehicle’s tyres earlier that day. According to the police, after hitting Fauja Singh, the accused panicked and fled the scene without offering help or contacting emergency services. The SSP emphasized that it was the driver’s duty to stop and assist the victim, regardless of circumstances.
Authorities confirmed that Dhillon had returned to India from Canada on June 23. He had initially traveled to Canada on a tourist visa and later secured a work permit valid until 2027. His return and continued stay in Punjab are now under investigation as part of broader legal proceedings.
An FIR has been lodged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, specifically Sections 281 for rash driving and 105 for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. These charges reflect the gravity of the offense and are expected to lead to stringent legal consequences if proven in court. The case is currently under active investigation, with forensic analysis of the vehicle and testimonies from eyewitnesses being compiled by law enforcement.
