More than 25,000 people are expected to attend this year’s Dallas Mayor’s Back to School Fair at Fair Park on Friday. This annual event, which has been serving the Dallas community for nearly three decades, aims to help children from economically disadvantaged families start the school year prepared and supported. The fair continues to be a vital resource for families, offering free school supplies, backpacks, and access to various services that ensure students are ready to succeed when classes begin.
Nearly 13,000 students representing approximately 5,800 families will benefit from the event. They will receive essential school supplies and backpacks while also gaining access to other forms of support from nearly 200 vendors participating in this large-scale initiative. The event is made possible through the collaboration of multiple organizations that contribute resources and services to ensure the success of the program. The city of Dallas is providing the backpacks, Walmart is offering free eye exams, Baylor Scott & White is conducting kidney screenings, and Parkland Health is providing immunizations. Additionally, Coca-Cola is donating 200 laptops to further enhance the educational support offered at the fair.
The event is not only about providing supplies but also about fostering a sense of community and ensuring that children have access to the tools and care they need. This combination of educational materials and health services ensures that students are equipped both physically and academically to take on the new school year. The fair’s longstanding tradition highlights the city’s commitment to supporting families and closing gaps in educational resources.
In addition to the Dallas Mayor’s Back to School Fair, other school districts in the area are hosting similar events to help students across the region. Dallas ISD will host its own Back to School kickoff at the Ellis Davis Field House on South Polk Street on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. At this event, parents can receive assistance with on-site registration, and students will be given free school supplies, including backpacks and other services, ensuring they are ready to start school successfully.
Several neighboring districts are also preparing for their own back to school events. Arlington ISD is organizing its annual Back to School Kickoff at AT&T Stadium on Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. Families attending the Arlington event must register online ahead of time to receive free backpacks and supplies. In Denton County, Friendship Baptist Church of The Colony will host a Back to School rally and health fair on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, providing both educational support and health services to attending families.
Fort Worth ISD will hold its Back to School Fair on Saturday, August 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Artes de la Rosa on North Main Street. Students and their families can pick up free backpacks and school supplies while also connecting with services that promote academic readiness. Meanwhile, Mesquite ISD’s annual Back to School Fair is scheduled for Saturday, August 2, from 8 a.m. to noon. Families can pick up free backpacks and supplies at designated locations based on their feeder pattern. These include Poteet for North Mesquite and Poteet feeder patterns, West Mesquite for Mesquite High School and West feeder patterns, and Horn for the Horn feeder pattern. Vanguard students will attend according to their home campus. No registration is required for the Mesquite event, but supplies are limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
The collective effort of these districts and organizations highlights the strong community support for education and the well-being of students. By providing essential resources, health screenings, and other services, these events ensure that children across North Texas are ready to begin the school year with confidence and the necessary tools for success. Families benefit not only from the free supplies but also from the access to health services and educational assistance that these events provide.
The Dallas Mayor’s Back to School Fair, along with the other fairs across the region, represents more than just a giveaway of supplies. It embodies the commitment of local governments, schools, health providers, and businesses to work together to support education and student success. These fairs continue to play an essential role in helping children from all backgrounds start their school year on the right track, prepared and motivated to learn.
