Army considers parade in D.C. on president’s birthday to mark historic milestone
The U.S. Army is preparing for a significant military parade on June 14, 2025, to commemorate its 250th anniversary, coinciding with President Donald Trump's 79th birthday. While final approval is pending, detailed plans outline a large-scale event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., showcasing the Army's history and capabilities.

According to planning documents dated April 29 and 30, the proposed parade would feature over 6,600 soldiers from at least 11 corps and divisions nationwide. The event aims to highlight various military units, including Stryker battalions, tank companies, infantry units with Bradley vehicles, Paladin artillery, and Howitzers. Additionally, the parade would include 150 military vehicles, 50 helicopters, seven Army bands, and a parachute demonstration by the Golden Knights. Civilian participants, such as veterans' groups, military colleges, reenactor organizations, and historical vehicle displays, are also expected to join the festivities.

The parade route is planned to stretch from Arlington, Virginia, across the Potomac River into Washington, D.C., culminating on the National Mall. An evening concert and fireworks display are anticipated to follow the parade. The event is proposed to be designated as a national special security event, with the National Park Service submitting the request currently under review.

Logistical considerations are substantial, involving the transportation of equipment and personnel from across the country, housing for thousands of service members, and coordination among various agencies. Concerns have been raised regarding potential damage to city infrastructure due to the movement of heavy military vehicles. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has expressed reservations, noting that if tanks are used, significant funds would be required to repair the roads.

This parade concept echoes a similar proposal during Trump's first term, inspired by France's Bastille Day celebration in 2017. That plan was ultimately canceled due to projected costs nearing $92 million and logistical challenges. The current proposal, while still under discussion, represents a renewed effort to honor the Army's legacy and fulfill a long-standing vision of a grand military display in the nation's capital. As of now, no formal approval has been granted, and discussions continue among the Army, the White House, and local officials to finalize the details of this significant commemorative event.
