Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France has placed India in a prominent diplomatic position as leaders gather for the G7 Summit in Évian. India has been invited as an outreach partner, giving New Delhi a platform to raise issues linked to economic growth, technology, energy security, resilient supply chains and the concerns of the Global South. The official G7 agenda includes geopolitical challenges, Ukraine and European security, the Middle East, international partnerships, balanced growth and artificial intelligence.
Modi-Macron Talks Deepen Ties
Before the summit, Modi held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Nice, where both sides focused on strengthening the India-France strategic partnership. The visit highlighted cooperation in defence, space, innovation, digital technology, clean energy, education and healthcare. A key outcome was the India-France Innovation Roadmap 2030, aimed at expanding collaboration in critical and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, start-ups, research and industry partnerships. The two sides also agreed to build stronger cooperation around AI governance and capacity building.
Technology And Trade In Focus
India’s digital and innovation agenda received a major push during the visit. The expansion of UPI access to French travel hubs is expected to support Indian tourists, students, business travellers and the diaspora. Both countries also moved to support Indian start-ups in France and deepen research links through new education and digital science initiatives. Trade remained another major priority, with both sides looking at stronger economic engagement in critical minerals, semiconductors, cybersecurity, energy and advanced technology.
Global South Message At Summit
At the G7, Modi is expected to underline India’s position that global institutions must better reflect the needs of developing nations. New Delhi has repeatedly argued that poorer economies are often hit hardest by wars, sanctions, supply disruptions and energy price shocks. The summit also creates space for key sideline diplomacy, including expected engagement with US President Donald Trump on trade, strategic issues and regional stability. Modi’s France visit shows how India is using bilateral partnerships and global forums together to expand its diplomatic influence.
