What was meant to be a historic celebration turned into a heartbreaking tragedy at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, where 11 people died and 47 were injured in a stampede during the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) IPL victory event. The youngest victim was a 14-year-old girl, and all the deceased were under the age of 40.
Among those who lost their lives were teenagers and young adults who had gathered with friends to celebrate RCB’s first IPL win in 18 years. The victims included Divyanshi (14), Bhoomik (20), Shivalinga (17), Chinmayi (19), Prajwal (20), Shravan (20), Sahana (25), Akshata (27), Devi (29), Doresha (32), and Manoj (33). Many had traveled from surrounding districts, unaware that the day’s excitement would turn deadly.
The stampede unfolded due to a deadly mix of poor planning, inadequate crowd control, and overwhelming turnout. Although the stadium has a maximum capacity of around 35,000, more than 3 lakh people attempted to gain entry following RCB's announcement of a free, first-come-first-serve fan event. Despite Bengaluru Police initially denying permission for a victory parade citing security concerns, the Karnataka State Cricket Association and team organisers went ahead with plans, triggering uncontrollable crowds.
As the situation spiraled, barricades were pushed down, gates were climbed, and in the chaos, several fans tripped and were trampled. Security forces on site were grossly outnumbered, in part because a significant police presence had been redirected to the VIP reception for the RCB team at Vidhana Soudha, where Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar felicitated the players.
In response to growing criticism, CM Siddaramaiah announced compensation for the families of the deceased and free treatment for the injured. However, his comment referencing past incidents like the Kumbh Mela tragedy drew sharp criticism from the opposition. BJP leader Pralhad Joshi condemned the government, questioning the rationale behind allowing the event after police objections and accusing state leaders of continuing celebrations while ignoring the public’s suffering.
The tragedy has ignited widespread public outrage and demands for accountability, with many calling for a judicial probe into the incident. As families mourn the loss of young lives, questions remain over how such a preventable disaster was allowed to unfold.
