India Coach Gautam Gambhir Under Scrutiny After T20 World Cup Setback

India's T20 World Cup 2026 journey has hit a rough patch after a heavy 76-run loss to South Africa in their Super 8 opener. While the team’s future in the tournament remains uncertain, their coach, Gautam Gambhir, is now under intense scrutiny for his handling of key decisions. Critics, including 1983 World Cup winner Krishnamachari Srikkanth, have raised concerns about Gambhir's strategies, particularly his team selection choices.

Srikkanth expressed doubts over Gambhir’s role, stating, "I am not sure what Gautam Gambhir does. Shouldn't he be the one strategizing and deciding the 11?" The former cricketer also criticized the decision to drop vice-captain Axar Patel, questioning whether such a move is fair or practical. "Will anyone drop Axar Patel? He's the vice-captain," Srikkanth remarked. He also pointed out the pattern of dropping vice-captains, referencing Shubman Gill's exclusion from the playing XI in the past.

The loss to South Africa has left India in a difficult position, where they now need favorable results from other matches to progress in the tournament. Srikkanth went on to call the defeat one of the worst in India's T20I history, drawing comparisons to their loss in the 2022 World Cup semifinals. He emphasized the importance of the upcoming matches against Zimbabwe and West Indies, adding, "Even the Zimbabwe-West Indies match has become important for India."

India’s next match in the Super 8 stage, scheduled for Wednesday, has now taken on even greater significance. Gambhir and his team are under pressure to perform and make the necessary adjustments to stay alive in the tournament. As the team prepares for the challenge ahead, all eyes will be on the coach's decisions in the coming days.
