A historic moment unfolded at the start of the Copa del Rey final as Real Sociedad’s Ander Barrenetxea scored the fastest goal ever recorded in the competition’s championship match. Just 15 seconds after kickoff, the forward capitalized on an early defensive lapse by Atlético de Madrid, giving his team an immediate advantage and setting a new benchmark in Spanish football history.
The play began with Gonçalo Guedes controlling the ball on the left flank after an error by Atlético’s Giuliano. Guedes delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, where Barrenetxea surged forward and headed the ball into the net. The rapid sequence caught Atlético off guard and delivered an early psychological blow in one of Spain’s most prestigious domestic finals.
Barrenetxea’s goal surpasses the previous record for the fastest strike in a Copa del Rey final, set in 2006 when Raúl Tamudo scored after 87 seconds in a match between Espanyol and Zaragoza. More recently, Rodrygo Goes found the net 107 seconds into the 2023 final between Real Madrid and Osasuna, but neither approached the speed of Barrenetxea’s historic effort.
While the goal now stands as the quickest in Copa del Rey final history, it does not rank as the fastest in all of Spanish football. That distinction remains with Joseba Llorente, who scored just seven seconds into a La Liga match between Valladolid and Espanyol on January 20, 2008.
Even so, Barrenetxea’s achievement secures his place in Spanish football history, marking a remarkable start to one of the sport’s biggest domestic events and underscoring Real Sociedad’s aggressive opening strategy on the grand stage.
