Putin Signals Possible Ukraine Peace Talks as Ceasefire Begins
Vladimir Putin has hinted that the Russia-Ukraine war could be nearing an end, raising hopes of a possible peace agreement after years of conflict. Speaking during Russia’s Victory Day events in Moscow, Putin said the situation appeared to be “coming to an end” as diplomatic discussions gained momentum.
The remarks came alongside the start of a three-day ceasefire backed by the United States. Russia and Ukraine also agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners each in one of the biggest prisoner swaps since the war began in 2022. The temporary pause in fighting has sparked global attention, with several countries closely watching the developments.
During the Victory Day celebrations, Putin praised Russian troops and stated that discussions on future peace arrangements could occur if both sides move toward a long-term agreement. He also indicated that direct talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy would depend on progress toward a lasting settlement.
Former US President Donald Trump called for the ceasefire to be extended further to help end the conflict. Despite tensions continuing in some regions, there were no immediate reports of major ceasefire violations during the initial hours of the truce.
