Germany train delays ease after GSM-R communication breakdown

Nationwide rail disruption halts services

Train operations across Germany were brought to a standstill after a nationwide failure in the railway communication network disrupted services operated by Deutsche Bahn. The state-owned operator confirmed that trains were temporarily immobilised at stations as a precautionary measure while technical teams worked to identify and resolve the fault affecting the system.

Communication system failure identified

The disruption was traced to a malfunction in the Global System for Mobile Communication for Railways, known as GSM-R, which serves as a critical communication link between train drivers and control centres. Authorities said the system failure prevented safe coordination of rail movement, leading to an immediate suspension of services across multiple regions to ensure passenger safety.

Services gradually restored after repair

Following several hours of disruption, Deutsche Bahn announced that the technical issue had been resolved and train movement was gradually resuming across the network. While operations have restarted, the company cautioned that delays and cancellations are likely to continue as services stabilize and schedules are restored to normal levels.

Passenger impact and operational response

The outage caused significant disruption at major stations, including Munich, where passengers were advised not to board trains amid widespread cancellations and delays. Travelers were left waiting on platforms as information boards displayed service restrictions. The operator later apologized for the inconvenience and confirmed that affected passengers would be eligible for compensation, including taxi and hotel support where required, as the system returns to full capacity.
