Mojtaba Khamenei absent from funeral gathering

Iran’s political, religious and military leadership gathered in Tehran to pay respects to late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but the continued absence of his successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, drew attention during the mourning ceremonies. The funeral prayers at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla became one of the most closely watched public gatherings of Iran’s leadership since the conflict that led to the former leader’s death. Three of Khamenei’s sons, Masoud, Meysam and Mostafa, were present alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and senior military commanders.

Absence fuels public concern

Mojtaba Khamenei’s absence stood out because he was appointed supreme leader after his father’s death and has not returned to public view during the funeral ceremonies. His nonappearance has created concern among supporters and mourners, while also becoming a focus of political speculation. Some attendees expressed hope that he would appear before the funeral prayer began, reflecting the symbolic importance of public visibility during a leadership transition.

Reports citing Iranian accounts have said Mojtaba suffered facial injuries and serious damage to one or both legs and has remained under medical isolation. Other reports have pointed to security concerns as a possible reason for his absence. Iranian officials have not clearly announced whether he will take part in later ceremonies, leaving questions over his condition and public role unanswered.

Funeral becomes leadership test

The funeral is expected to draw large crowds, with delegations from several countries taking part in mourning events. Ceremonies and processions are scheduled across multiple cities before the burial in Mashhad, making the event both a religious farewell and a major political moment for the Islamic Republic. The presence of senior officials was aimed at showing continuity and unity at a sensitive time for Iran’s leadership.

For Iran, the funeral comes during a period of pressure, uncertainty and regional tension. Mojtaba Khamenei’s absence has added another layer to that uncertainty, especially because public appearances often carry major political meaning in moments of succession. Until he is seen publicly or officials provide clearer details, questions over his health, security and leadership visibility are likely to continue.
