US President Donald Trump has confirmed that security officials directed him to secretly change aircraft while leaving Turkey after authorities detected a potential threat. Trump said he followed instructions from the Secret Service and military, shedding new light on an unusual presidential security operation involving Air Force One and a smaller military aircraft.
Trump plane switch followed security warning
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Trump confirmed that the decision was made by security officials rather than by him personally. He said he normally follows recommendations from the Secret Service and military when his protection is involved.
Trump said officials wanted him to take a different aircraft because of a threat and acknowledged that he did not seek many details because threats against him are common. His remarks provided the first direct confirmation from the president that security concerns were behind the unusual change in travel arrangements.
The incident occurred during Trump's return from a NATO summit in Turkey last month. He had travelled to Turkey aboard a Boeing 747-8 donated by Qatar and modified for presidential use, but subsequently shifted to the older presidential aircraft before another covert transfer.
C-32A flight formed part of covert operation
Reports about the operation say Trump publicly boarded the larger presidential aircraft before security personnel discreetly moved him away from it. He was then transported in an airport catering vehicle to a smaller US Air Force C-32A aircraft for the next stage of his journey.
Staff members and journalists remained aboard the larger aircraft while Trump travelled separately, creating a deliberate deception over his actual location. The operation remained secret until details emerged weeks later.
Trump said he had no objection to the arrangement because protecting the president was the responsibility of the Secret Service and military. He also suggested that the smaller aircraft may ultimately have offered less protection than the traditional Air Force One despite the effort to conceal his movements.
Reported Iran threat drove security concerns
The security measures reportedly followed intelligence indicating a possible Iranian-linked threat against Trump or his aircraft. Publicly available reporting has described the threat as serious enough for officials to alter the president's departure plan.
However, specific operational claims about who planned the potential attack, what weapon might have been used and precisely how imminent it was have not been publicly confirmed in detail by the Secret Service or White House.
