The SCO Summit 2026 remains at the centre of global attention as Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds high-level meetings in Bishkek. Modi’s talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin focused on bilateral ties and the need for dialogue to resolve conflicts, while Nepal continues a massive flood rescue operation and Pakistan sees fresh political chatter around Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Modi Putin Talks
Modi met Putin on August 31 on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders reviewed cooperation in defence, energy, trade, space, mobility and people-to-people ties.
They also discussed major regional and global issues, including conflicts affecting the Black Sea region and West Asia. Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy remain the way forward in resolving wars and other disputes.
Separate reporting from the summit said Modi urged that the Ukraine war must end for the sake of humanity and reiterated India’s support for efforts aimed at peace.
SCO Summit in Bishkek
The Bishkek gathering brings together leaders from major Eurasian powers at a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty. India is using the summit to deepen relations with Russia, Kyrgyzstan and other SCO partners while maintaining its long-standing emphasis on security, connectivity and regional cooperation.
Modi also met Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov during the summit, adding a bilateral dimension to India’s Central Asia outreach.
The prime minister is expected to continue using the SCO platform to balance India’s strategic partnerships while calling for negotiated solutions to international conflicts.
Nepal Flood Rescue
Meanwhile, rescue operations in Nepal remain critical after devastating floods struck the Himalayan region. Nearly 1,000 workers are feared trapped or missing around hydropower projects, with rescue teams concentrating on damaged tunnel networks along the Trishuli River.
International assistance is expanding. South Korea is sending a 44-member disaster relief team following a formal request from Nepal, while Nepalese, Chinese and other foreign specialists continue search-and-rescue efforts.
The disaster has once again highlighted the growing vulnerability of Himalayan communities and infrastructure to glacier-related floods and other extreme events.
Russia Ukraine War
The Russia-Ukraine conflict continues to shape India’s diplomacy with Moscow. New Delhi has maintained close energy and strategic ties with Russia while repeatedly calling for an end to hostilities.
At Bishkek, Modi again positioned India as a supporter of peaceful resolution rather than military escalation. Putin, meanwhile, briefed Modi on Russia’s view of the conflict and said Moscow remained engaged on the question of peace.
Bilawal Marriage Rumours
In Pakistan, speculation surrounding Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s personal life has also drawn attention online. However, Bilawal himself has now rejected reports that he is engaged or preparing to marry.
He said social media had effectively arranged his engagement and wedding without any basis and added that any genuine announcement about his personal life would come from his family.
