West Town ranks No. 18 worldwide

Chicago’s West Town has been ranked No. 18 on Time Out’s 2026 list of the 40 coolest neighborhoods in the world, released on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. Time Out said neighborhoods were nominated by its global network of local experts, while editors evaluated factors including food and drink, nightlife, unique local businesses, liveability and community.

West Town was one of three U.S. neighborhoods on the list. Chinatown in Los Angeles ranked No. 4, while New York City’s Financial District placed No. 28. Jongno 3-ga in Seoul, South Korea, took the No. 1 position.

Dining, nightlife and culture drive recognition

Time Out highlighted West Town’s combination of restaurants, bars, shops and cultural spaces, along with newer openings that have strengthened the neighborhood’s profile. The publication identified Chicago Avenue as a central commercial corridor.

The neighborhood’s cultural history also featured in the assessment. Time Out described West Town as shaped by German, Polish, Ukrainian and Russian immigration, with later contributions from Puerto Rican, Mexican and African American communities.

West Town boundaries and dining destinations

West Town’s boundaries vary depending on the definition, but Time Out generally places the neighborhood between the Chicago River and Kedzie Street and between Division and Hubbard streets. The broader area includes Ukrainian Village, Noble Square and East Village.

Dining remains a major draw. Time Out highlighted Feld and Kasama, and both restaurants currently appear in the Michelin Guide’s Chicago selection.

Chicago continues its run on the global list

West Town’s placement follows other Chicago neighborhoods recognized by Time Out. Logan Square ranked No. 34 in 2024, while Avondale reached No. 5 in 2025.

The 2026 ranking extends Chicago’s presence on Time Out’s annual global list, with West Town recognized for the combination of dining, culture, nightlife, independent businesses and community life that shaped the publication’s evaluation.
