Etihad Airways has confirmed that U.S. Customs and Border Protection preclearance is operating for eligible U.S.-bound flights from Abu Dhabi, giving passengers the ability to complete key U.S. entry formalities before leaving the United Arab Emirates.

In an update published on September 10, 2026, Etihad said eligible flights to the United States would operate with full U.S. CBP preclearance services at Zayed International Airport.

U.S. immigration can be completed in Abu Dhabi

The preclearance facility allows eligible passengers to complete U.S. immigration, customs and agriculture inspections before boarding their flight.

After completing the process in Abu Dhabi, travelers generally arrive in the United States as domestic passengers rather than joining the regular international arrivals immigration line. CBP describes preclearance as the inspection of U.S.-bound travelers at approved overseas airports before they depart for the United States.

This can be particularly useful for passengers traveling from India to the United States through Abu Dhabi because the U.S. immigration process can be completed during the connection rather than after the long-haul flight.

Which Etihad U.S. flights are eligible?

Etihad's September 10 update says all eligible U.S.-bound flights will receive full preclearance services. The airline currently operates U.S. services to destinations including New York, Washington, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta and Charlotte.

However, Etihad's passenger FAQ currently identifies specific flights with access to the facility, including services to New York, Washington, Boston and Chicago, while stating that additional flights are expected to be added.

Passengers should therefore check the status of their specific flight rather than assuming every itinerary automatically includes preclearance.

Travelers should allow extra time at Abu Dhabi Airport

Etihad advises passengers traveling to the United States from Abu Dhabi to arrive at Zayed International Airport Terminal A at least four hours before departure.

Passengers should proceed to the CBP preclearance facility about two hours before departure. Etihad recommends 90 minutes for travelers in Business, First or The Residence.

The facility is located in Terminal A at the end of Pier C.
