Trump and Mamdani strike warmer tone at Gracie Mansion
Trump spent about an hour meeting privately with Mamdani at the mayor’s official residence during the president’s trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. It was their third in-person meeting, following encounters at the White House in November 2025 and February 2026.
After the talks, Trump publicly praised Mamdani and said he hoped the mayor would succeed. The tone contrasted with their earlier political exchanges, when Trump had repeatedly criticized Mamdani’s policies and ideology. Both men acknowledged that major disagreements remain but emphasized areas where federal and city cooperation could produce practical results.
Immigration and Haitian TPS remain points of disagreement
Immigration was one of the central topics. Mamdani said he raised concerns about federal immigration policies, including the administration’s move to end Temporary Protected Status for some groups, with particular attention to Haitian New Yorkers. He argued that immigrant communities are important to both the social fabric and economy of the city.
Trump and Mamdani continue to take different approaches to immigration enforcement. Mamdani said those differences would not prevent him from holding further discussions with the White House when cooperation could benefit city residents. The exchange reflects a broader effort by the mayor to maintain federal communication even while challenging policies his administration opposes.
Sunnyside Yard housing plan moves into further talks
Housing produced one of the clearest areas of potential cooperation. Mamdani is seeking more than $21 billion in federal support to build a platform over Sunnyside Yard in Queens, which could support 12,000 affordable homes and create about 30,000 jobs. The proposal was first presented directly to Trump during their February meeting in Washington.
The September meeting did not produce a federal funding commitment, but both sides agreed to continue technical discussions. Trump acknowledged the scale and cost of the project, while Mamdani has described it as a rare opportunity to use the rail yard for a major new housing development.
The project would require extensive engineering and federal involvement because Sunnyside Yard remains an active rail complex serving several transportation systems.
Press access also enters Trump-Mamdani discussion
The two leaders also addressed the White House dispute with CNN, Politico and MS NOW over press access. Those organizations have challenged the administration’s restrictions in court, arguing that their access was revoked because of editorial coverage.
Mamdani said journalists of differing viewpoints would be welcome at his joint appearance with Trump, reflecting his administration’s stated approach to press access. Trump, meanwhile, continued defending the White House restrictions and rejected claims that they were intended to avoid scrutiny.
The Gracie Mansion meeting showed that Trump and Mamdani remain far apart on several political issues while still identifying areas for cooperation. Housing now appears to be the most concrete test of that relationship, with the Sunnyside Yard proposal requiring sustained negotiations between City Hall and Washington.
