Trump-backed Ken Paxton faces new scrutiny in Texas Senate race

Trump-backed Ken Paxton faces new scrutiny in Texas Senate race as questions over a Dubai trip and past controversies add uncertainty to one of the most closely watched 2026 contests. James Talarico remains competitive in polling, turning a traditionally Republican seat into a major midterm battleground.

Ken Paxton Dubai trip

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is facing renewed attention over a New Year's Eve gathering in Dubai that reportedly included his partner, Tracy Duhon, and two Americans who were facing federal criminal charges.

The gathering has become politically sensitive because one attendee, Anosh Ahmed, had previously contributed to Paxton's political campaigns. Ahmed and Sameer Suhail were among defendants accused by federal prosecutors of participating in an alleged scheme involving more than $15 million in improper hospital payments. Both defendants are entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty.

Paxton's advisers have dismissed broader criticism of him as politically motivated and argue that Texas voters have repeatedly supported him despite years of controversy.

Healthcare fraud charges

Federal prosecutors accused Ahmed and Suhail in 2024 of participating in a scheme involving fraudulent vendor payments from a Chicago hospital. Prosecutors later brought additional allegations against Ahmed in a separate COVID-19 testing case involving hundreds of millions of dollars in government reimbursements.

The Dubai connection does not itself establish wrongdoing by Paxton. Politically, however, it gives Democrats another line of attack against the Republican Senate nominee as voters assess his judgment and associations.

Paxton political controversies

Paxton has survived several major political crises during his career. The Texas House impeached him in 2023 over allegations of abuse of office, but the state Senate acquitted him. He has consistently denied wrongdoing and has maintained strong support among many conservative and MAGA-aligned voters.

That record helps explain why President Donald Trump's endorsement was so important during the Republican contest. Trump backed Paxton over incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, helping strengthen Paxton's standing with Republican primary voters.

James Talarico polling lead

The general election has proved more competitive than Republicans might have expected in Texas. Recent polling has shown Democratic nominee James Talarico narrowly ahead in some surveys, while others indicate a much tighter race.

Texas has not elected a Democrat statewide since 1994, making even a close contest politically significant. A Democratic victory would also affect the national battle for Senate control in the November 3 election.

Trump endorsement gamble

Trump's decision to support Paxton now carries consequences beyond the Republican primary. If Paxton wins, the endorsement will reinforce Trump's influence over GOP candidates. If Democrats capture the seat, critics are likely to question whether Republicans sacrificed a safer nominee for a more controversial candidate.

Paxton's political durability means the outcome remains far from certain. Texas continues to lean Republican, and voter turnout could prove decisive. But fresh scrutiny, close polling and national attention have transformed the Texas Senate race into a contest both parties must take seriously.
