Boeing 737 MAX 10 wins FAA approval, deliveries set for 2027

Boeing 737 MAX 10 wins FAA approval, deliveries set for 2027, marking a major milestone for the largest aircraft in Boeing’s MAX family. The FAA completes safety review after years of certification delays as Boeing prepares production expansion and airlines await the higher-capacity jet.

FAA completes safety review

US aviation regulators have granted final certification to the Boeing 737 MAX 10, clearing the aircraft for commercial deliveries after an extensive review of its design and safety systems.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the aircraft meets applicable certification requirements. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said regulators would continue holding Boeing to strict safety standards as production moves forward.

The approval follows certification of the smaller MAX 7 and gives Boeing regulatory clearance for another important member of its narrow-body aircraft family.

737 MAX 10 certification delays

Boeing unveiled the MAX 10 at the Paris Air Show in 2017, and the aircraft completed its first flight in June 2021. Initial deliveries were once expected in 2023, but certification took considerably longer.

Regulators increased scrutiny of Boeing after the two fatal 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people. Further questions about manufacturing quality emerged after the January 2024 Alaska Airlines incident involving a fuselage panel.

The MAX 10 certification process therefore became an important test of Boeing’s efforts to rebuild confidence in its engineering, manufacturing and quality-control systems.

Boeing production expansion

Boeing expects to begin delivering the MAX 10 in 2027 and is preparing to increase production across the 737 MAX programme.

CEO Kelly Ortberg has said the company aims to raise monthly MAX output to 52 aircraft during 2027, compared with the production rate currently authorised by regulators.

Boeing has also expanded manufacturing capacity in Everett, Washington, adding a new 737 production line alongside its established operations in Renton. A recently approved labour agreement has removed another potential source of disruption as the company prepares for higher output.

MAX 10 capacity and airline appeal

The 737 MAX 10 is the largest model in Boeing’s MAX family and can accommodate up to 230 passengers, according to Boeing.

Its higher seating capacity is designed for airlines that want to carry more travellers on busy routes while retaining the economics and operating structure of a single-aisle aircraft.

That makes the MAX 10 particularly important in a market where airlines are seeking greater capacity without moving to larger twin-aisle jets.

What certification means for Boeing

FAA approval removes one of Boeing’s biggest remaining regulatory hurdles and gives the company a clearer path toward expanding aircraft deliveries and improving cash flow.

The milestone does not end regulatory scrutiny. Boeing will still face continuing oversight of manufacturing quality, production rates and operational safety.

For airlines waiting for the MAX 10, certification provides greater certainty around fleet planning. For Boeing, successful production and reliable deliveries will now determine whether the aircraft can translate regulatory approval into stronger financial performance and restored customer confidence.
