The United Arab Emirates has honoured Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar and fellow flydubai crew members for their courage during a violent cockpit attack on September 30, 2026. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan awarded the First Class Order of Zayed II in recognition of their actions to protect passengers and prevent a major aviation disaster.
UAE Honours Flydubai Crew
The honours were announced on October 27 through the Emirates News Agency, the UAE's official news service.
The First Class Order of Zayed II recognises the crew's exceptional courage, professionalism and commitment to passenger safety during the emergency.
The recipients expressed gratitude to the UAE leadership for acknowledging their efforts. Senior aviation officials also attended the ceremony.
Smit Machchhar Cockpit Attack
Captain Machchhar was operating flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv when his co-pilot attacked him with an emergency axe.
Despite suffering serious head and arm injuries, Machchhar struggled to remain conscious and managed to unlock the cockpit door.
His actions allowed passengers and other crew members to enter the cockpit and intervene.
UAE prosecutors have described the incident as an attempted terrorist attack. The allegations against the detained co-pilot remain part of the criminal case.
Flydubai Flight FZ1073 Emergency
The aircraft was flying through Saudi airspace when the attack occurred, causing it to descend rapidly.
Two off-duty pilots travelling aboard the aircraft eventually regained control after the attacker was restrained.
The flight diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Everyone aboard survived the incident.
Machchhar subsequently received medical treatment in Abu Dhabi while recovering from his injuries.
Sheikh Hamdan Presents UAE Honour
Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum presented the awards on behalf of the UAE President.
Sheikh Hamdan had previously visited Machchhar during his recovery and praised his sense of responsibility and determination to protect human life.
The ceremony also recognised the coordinated response of the crew, whose actions helped bring the emergency under control.
Indian Pilot Receives Global Recognition
Captain Machchhar's courage has received praise from leaders in India, the UAE, Israel and the United States.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally spoke with the injured pilot following the incident and acknowledged his bravery.
Israeli officials have also announced plans to recognise his actions through a civilian bravery award.
The UAE honour highlights the importance of training, teamwork and quick decisions during aviation emergencies.
For Indian communities worldwide, Machchhar's recognition represents a moment of pride and a reminder of the dedication shown by aviation professionals working abroad.
