Fast bowler Harshit Rana has been officially added to India’s 18-man squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, which kicks off on June 20 at Headingley. The addition, announced by Star Sports, marks a strengthening of India’s pace arsenal in conditions known to favour fast bowlers. Although there’s no official clarification from the BCCI about whether Rana has been brought in as an injury replacement, his inclusion is seen as a depth move with India rotating fast bowlers throughout the series.
Rana will join a strong pace attack featuring Jasprit Bumrah, who will be available for only the first three Tests, alongside Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Akash Deep, and Prasidh Krishna. Headingley, the venue for the series opener, is a fast bowler-friendly pitch, making Rana’s presence a tactical move for India’s new skipper Shubman Gill, who will be leading the team for the first time in Tests.
Rana last featured in red-ball cricket during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia earlier this year. He had a decent outing, claiming four wickets in the Adelaide Test before going wicketless in Perth. More recently, Rana was part of the India A squad and played in the Canterbury match against England Lions, returning figures of 1/99. He also featured in an intra-squad practice game at Beckenham and is among the few players who remained in England during the transition phase of squad selection.
India’s squad includes a mix of youth and experience. Apart from Rana and the pace attack, it features top-order batters like Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and Sai Sudharsan. Rishabh Pant returns as vice-captain and wicketkeeper, while Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav form the spin backbone. The team also features promising all-rounders like Nitish Kumar Reddy and veteran Karun Nair.
India will be aiming to overcome their previous series loss to Australia and re-establish dominance under new leadership in challenging English conditions. With Bumrah's limited availability and key Test venues lined up, the inclusion of Harshit Rana offers critical support in sustaining the intensity across the series.
